Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent me and Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen, he instructed us that each of us should stay close to his companion. He said to us: "Make things easy and do not make them difficult, give glad tidings and do not make people averse." When we were about to leave, I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Please tell us your ruling regarding two types of drinks that we prepare. One is 'bit' which is made from honey. Its nabidh is prepared until it becomes strong, and 'mizr' which is made from barley and corn, its nabidh is prepared until it becomes intense." Since the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was granted concise and comprehensive words, he said: "Every intoxicant that prevents you from prayer is forbidden for you." The narrator says: One day Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me while I had a man with me who was previously a Jew, then he accepted Islam, then he became a Jew again. He (Mu'adh) asked me about this matter. I informed him about it, then I said to Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him): "Please sit down." He replied: "I will not sit until I offer him Islam. If he accepts it, then fine, otherwise I will strike his neck." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) offered him Islam. He refused to accept Islam, so Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) struck his neck. One day Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me: "How do you recite the Qur'an?" I replied: "I recite it while sitting, standing, and even lying on my bed." Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him): "How do you recite it?" He replied: "I recite it, then I sleep, then I recite it while standing. Thus, I gain strength for my standing (in prayer) through my sleep, and I hope for reward from my sleep just as I hope for reward from my standing (in prayer)."
