Qais bin Hubtar narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about green pitchers, white pitchers, and red pitchers. He replied: The first to ask about this were the delegation of the tribe of Abdul Qais, who asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not drink from dabba’, muzaffat, and hantam (named vessels), and do not drink from a pitcher; rather, drink from water skins. The people said: What if the drink (nabidh) in the water skin becomes strong? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If the drink in the water skin becomes strong, then add water to it. They said: What if it still remains strong? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then pour it out. Then he said: Indeed, Allah the Exalted has made it unlawful for me. (The narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words:) Allah the Exalted has made wine, gambling, and kubah unlawful, and every intoxicating thing is also unlawful. Sufyan, the narrator, says: I asked Ali bin Badhimah: What is meant by kubah? He said: The drum.
