Section on Beverages - Substances Used to Make Alcohol Before Its Prohibition
Hadith 5359
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، وَابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ ، وَيَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي غَنِيَّةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَيَّانَ التَّيْمِيِّ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ ، عَلَى مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " أَمَّا بَعْدُ ، أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّهُ نَزَلَ تَحْرِيمُ الْخَمْرِ ، وَهِيَ مِنْ خَمْسَةٍ : مِنَ الْعِنَبِ ، وَالتَّمْرِ ، وَالْعَسَلِ ، وَالْحِنْطَةِ ، وَالشَّعِيرِ ، وَالْخَمْرُ : مَا خَامَرَ الْعَقْلَ ، ثَلاثٌ ، أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، وَدِدْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يُفَارِقْنَا ، حَتَّى يَعْهَدَ إِلَيْنَا فِيهِنَّ عَهْدًا نَنْتَهِي إِلَيْهِ : الْكَلالَةُ ، وَالْجَدُّ ، وَأَبْوَابٌ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الرِّبَا " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying this from the pulpit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "To proceed, O people! When the command regarding the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, it was being made from five things: grapes, dates, honey, wheat, and barley. As for khamr (intoxicant), it is every substance that covers the mind. O people! There are three things about which I wished that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had explained to us in more detail before he departed from us: kalalah (the issue of inheritance when there are no parents or children), the issue of the grandfather (in inheritance), and some forms of usury."
