Section on Beverages - Description of the Alcohol That Was Prohibited While People Were Drinking It
Hadith 5353
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ يُوسُفَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَلْمُ بْنُ جُنَادَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَيَّانَ التَّيْمِيُّ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ ، عَلَى هَذَا الْمِنْبَرِ ، يَقُولُ : " أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، إِنَّمَا نَزَلَ تَحْرِيمُ الْخَمْرِ ، وَهِيَ مِنْ خَمْسَةٍ : مِنَ الْعِنَبِ ، وَالتَّمْرِ ، وَالْعَسَلِ ، وَالْحِنْطَةِ ، وَالشَّعِيرِ ، وَمَا خَامَرَ الْعَقْلَ ، فَهُوَ خَمْرٌ ، ثَلاثٌ وَدِدْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَهِدَ إِلَيْنَا عَهْدًا ، نَنْتَهِي إِلَيْهِ : الْجَدُّ ، وَالْكَلالَةُ ، وَأَبْوَابٌ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الرِّبَا " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Umar saying from this pulpit: O people! When the command regarding the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, it was being made from five things: grapes, honey, wheat, and barley. Whatever covers the intellect is khamr (intoxicant). There are three things regarding which I wished that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had explained to us more clearly: (in inheritance) the issue of the grandfather, the issue of kalalah, and some forms of usury.
