Section on Beverages - Allah's Forgiveness for Muslims Who Died Drinking Alcohol Before Its Prohibition
Hadith 5350
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ ، قَالَ : " مَاتَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَهُمْ يَشْرَبُونَ الْخَمْرَ ، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ تَحْرِيمُهَا ، قَالَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فَكَيْفَ بِأَصْحَابِنَا الَّذِينَ مَاتُوا وَهُمْ يَشْرَبُونَهَا ؟ فَنَزَلَتْ : لَيْسَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ جُنَاحٌ فِيمَا طَعِمُوا إِذَا مَا اتَّقَوْا وَآمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ سورة المائدة آية 93 " .
Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Some of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away in such a state that they used to drink alcohol. When the command regarding the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, some of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What will become of our companions who passed away in such a state that they used to drink alcohol? Then this verse was revealed: "Those who believe and do righteous deeds, there is no sin upon them for what they consumed, provided they feared (Allah), believed, and did righteous deeds."
