Chapter on Etiquette of Drinking - Prohibition of Drinking from Gold and Silver Vessels for Those Hoping for Them in Paradise
Hadith 5339
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي فَرْوَةَ الْجُهَنِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُكَيْمٍ ، قَالَ : اسْتَسْقَى حُذَيْفَةُ مِنْ دِهْقَانٍ بِالْمَدَائِنِ ، فَأَتَاهُ بِشَرَابٍ فِي إِنَاءٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ ، فَحَذَفَهُ بِهَا ، فَهِبْنَا حُذَيْفَةَ أَنْ نُكَلِّمَهُ ، فَلَمَّا سَكَنَ الْغَضَبُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : أَعْتَذِرُ إِلَيْكُمْ مِنْ هَذَا ، إِنِّي كُنْتُ تَقَدَّمْتُ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ لا يَسْقِيَنِي فِي هَذَا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَامَ فِينَا خَطِيبًا ، قَالَ : " لا تَشْرَبُوا فِي إِنَاءِ الْفِضَّةِ وَلا الذَّهَبِ ، وَلا تَلْبَسُوا الْحَرِيرَ وَالدِّيبَاجَ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَكُمْ فِي الآخِرَةِ " ، قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : كَانَ حَدَّثَنَا بِهِ أَوَّلاً ابْنُ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ ، ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ ، ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ أَبِي فَرْوَةَ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُكَيْمِ ، قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : وَلا أَظُنُّ ابْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى سَمِعَهُ إِلا مِنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُكَيْمِ ؛ لأَنَّهُ قَدْ أَدْرَكَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةَ .
Abdullah bin Akeem narrates: Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked a farmer in Mada’in for water, so he brought water to him in a vessel made of silver. He threw it away. Due to awe, we did not say anything to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) about this. When his anger cooled down, he said: I present my excuse before you. I had already instructed him not to give me water to drink in such a vessel. Then he informed us that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood among us to deliver a sermon and said: Do not drink from vessels made of silver and gold, and do not wear silk and brocade, for these are for them (the disbelievers) in this world and for you in the Hereafter.
The narrator named Sufyan says: This narration was related to us by Ibn Abu Najeeh from Mujahid, from Ibn Abu Layla, from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). Then I heard him narrate it from Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, from Ibn Abu Layla, from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). Then I heard Abu Farwah say: I heard Abdullah bin Akeem narrate this. Sufyan says: I think Ibn Abu Layla must have also heard this narration from Abdullah bin Akeem because he lived during the time of ignorance.

Hadith 5340
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْجَعْدِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ مُقَرِّنٍ ، قَالَ : دَخَلْتُ عَلَى الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبِ ، فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ : " نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ سَبْعٍ : عَنْ خَوَاتِيمِ الذَّهَبِ ، وَعَنِ الْمَيَاثِرِ ، وَالْقِسِّيِّ ، وَعَنْ لُبْسِ الدِّيبَاجِ ، وَالْحَرِيرِ ، وَالإِسْتَبْرَقِ ، وَعَنِ الشُّرْبِ فِي الْفِضَّةِ " .
Muawiyah bin Suwaid bin Muqrin reports: I was present in the company of Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him), and I heard him narrate: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from seven things: gold rings, Mayathir, Qassi (a specific type of silk cloth to sit on), Dibaj, Harir, and Istabraq (specific types of silk garments), and from drinking from silver vessels.
