Chapter on Etiquette of Drinking - Prohibition of Eating or Drinking with the Left Hand to Oppose Satan
Hadith 5331
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْقَطَّانُ بِالرَّقَّةِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا نُوحُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا يَأْكُلْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِشِمَالِهِ ، وَلا يَشْرَبْ بِشِمَالِهِ ، فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَأْكُلُ بِشِمَالِهِ ، وَيَشْرَبُ بِشِمَالِهِ " ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ : يَا أَبَا عُرْوَةَ ، إِنَّ الزُّهْرِيَّ رَوَى هَذَا عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ مَعْمَرٌ : إِنَّ الزُّهْرِيَّ كَانَ يُحَدِّثُ بِالْحَدِيثِ عَنِ النَّفْرِ ، فَلَعَلَّ هَذَا مِنْهُ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No person should eat with his left hand nor drink with his left hand, because Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand." Sufyan bin Uyaynah said: O Abu Urwah! Zuhri has narrated this hadith on the authority of Abu Bakr bin Ubaidullah, so Muammar said: Zuhri narrates from several people, so perhaps this is also among those narrations.
