Hospitality – Clarification that a guest may demand his right if the host does not fulfill it
Hadith 5288
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَيْرِ ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ ، أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، نَنْزِلُ بِقَوْمٍ لا يُضَيِّفُونَا ، فَكَيْفَ تَرَى فِي ذَلِكَ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنْ نَزَلْتُمْ بِقَوْمٍ ، فَأَمَرُوا لَكُمْ بِمَا يَنْبَغِي لِلضَّيْفِ ، فَاقْبَلُوا ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلُوا ، فَخُذُوا مِنْهُمْ حَقَّ الضَّيْفِ الَّذِي يَنْبَغِي لَهُ " .
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The people said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We stay with a certain people, but they do not show us hospitality. What is your opinion about this?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you stay with a people and they order for you what is appropriate for a guest, then accept it. But if they do not do so, then take from them the right of the guest which should be given to a guest."
