Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a state of hunger, so he came to Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: Do you have anything to eat? She replied: I have only one mudd of barley flour. Sayyiduna Abu Talhah said: Knead it and prepare it, we will invite the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so that he may eat with us. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The woman kneaded the flour and baked the bread. Then Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the bread and said: Call the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to my house.
The narrator says: I went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and there were some people with him. Here, the narrator named Mubarak bin Fadalah has narrated these words: I think they were more than 80 people. I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) has invited you. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his companions: Accept Abu Talhah’s invitation. (Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says) I quickly went and informed Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) about this: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions are coming. Here, the narrator named Bakr has narrated these words: I quickly went, and the narrator named Thabit has narrated these words: Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) knows better than me what is in my house. Then after this, both narrators have narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) welcomed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: We have only a tray (amount) of food. I saw you hungry, so I told Umm Sulaym, and she prepared this food.
The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had that tray brought, and he had a bowl brought and placed the bread in it. He asked: Do you have any ghee? Sayyiduna Abu Talhah said: There is a little in a small container. He brought it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) began to squeeze it until a little ghee came out. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) applied it with his index finger and spread it on the bread, and it swelled. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited Bismillah, and the bread swelled even more. After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) continued to do this until the bread swelled and covered the entire tray. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Call ten men from my companions. I called ten men. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) placed his blessed hand in the middle of the bread. He said: Begin eating in the name of Allah, seeking blessing. They began to eat the bread from the sides until they were full. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Call ten more men to me. After that, Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) kept calling ten at a time until all those people, more than 80, ate the bread from the sides until they were all full, and the middle part of the bread where the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had placed his blessed hand remained as it was before.
