Hadith 5276
Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We set out towards Khaybar with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). One of those present said: O ‘Amir! If you would entertain us with your songs (it would be appropriate). So Sayyiduna ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) got down from his mount to recite poetry for the people. He mentioned Allah Almighty and then recited a verse of poetry which I do not remember. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: Who is the man leading the animal? The people replied: This is ‘Amir bin Akwa’. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: May Allah have mercy on him. One of those present said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! If you would allow us to enjoy this (it would be a favor).
When they attacked the enemies and fought with them, Sayyiduna ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded. When evening came, they lit many fires. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: Is there a reason for this fire, and what is being cooked? The people replied: Donkey meat is being cooked. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Pour out what is in the pots and break them. One man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Should we not pour out what is in them and wash them instead? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Do so.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “Pour out what is in them” is a binding command. And the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “Break them” is a command to show severity and strictness. It is not a binding command. Do you not see that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded the pots to be broken, the man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Should we not pour out what is in them and wash them? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Do so.
