Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched an expedition towards the coast. He appointed Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as our commander. We were three hundred men. I was among them. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We set out and along the way our provisions ran out, so Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that all the provisions of the army be gathered. When they were collected, it amounted to a single bag of dates. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) would give us a small portion of dates daily from it. Until even that finished, then we would get one date each.
(The narrator says:) What would you do with one date? He replied: When even that finished, then we felt its absence. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Then we reached the sea, and there was a fish like a small hill. The army ate its meat for eleven days. Then, by the order of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him), its two ribs were set upright, then a camel was prepared and it passed underneath those ribs without touching them.
