Hadith 5260
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْنَا أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ يَتَلَقَّى عِيرًا لِقُرَيْشٍ ، وَزَوَّدَنَا جِرَابَ تَمْرٍ لَمْ يَجِدْ لَنَا غَيْرَهُ ، فَكَانَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ يُطْعِمُنَا تَمْرَةً تَمْرَةً ، قُلْتُ : فَكَيْفَ كُنْتُمْ تَصْنَعُونَ بِهَا ؟ قَالَ : نَمُصُّهَا كَمَا يَمُصُّ الصَّبِيُّ ، ثُمَّ نَشْرَبُ عَلَيْهَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ ، فَيَكْفِينَا يَوْمَنَا إِلَى اللَّيْلِ ، قَالَ : وَكُنَّا نَضْرِبُ بِعِصِيِّنَا الْخَبَطَ ، ثُمَّ نَبُلُّهُ بِالْمَاءِ ، فَنَأْكُلُهُ ، قَالَ : فَانْطَلَقْنَا ، فَرُفِعَ لَنَا عَلَى سَاحِلِ الْبَحْرِ كَهَيْئَةِ الْكَثِيبِ الضَّخْمِ ، فَأَتَيْنَاهُ ، فَإِذَا هُوَ دَابَّةٌ تُدْعَى الْعَنْبَرَ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ : مَيْتَةٌ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : لا ، نَحْنُ رُسُلُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، وَقَدِ اضْطُرِرْتُمْ فَكُلُوا ، قَالَ : فَأَقَمْنَا عَلَيْهِ شَهْرًا ، وَنَحْنُ ثَلاثُ مِئَةٍ ، حَتَّى سَمِنَّا ، وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنَا نَغْتَرِفُ مِنْ وَقْبِ عَيْنَيْهِ بِالْقِلالِ ، وَنَقْطَعُ مِنْهُ الْفِدَرَ كَالثَّوْرِ أَوْ كَقَدْرِ الثَّوْرِ ، وَلَقَدْ أَخَذَ مِنَّا أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ ثَلاثَةَ عَشَرَ رَجُلاً ، فَأَقْعَدَهُمْ فِي وَقْبِ عَيْنِهِ ، وَأَخَذَ ضِلَعًا مِنْ أَضْلاعِهِ ، فَأَقَامَهَا ، ثُمَّ أَرْحَلَ أَعْظَمَ بَعِيرٍ مِنَّا ، فَمَرَّ تَحْتَهَا ، قَالَ : وَتَزَوَّدْنَا مِنْ لَحْمِهِ وَشَائِقَ ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ ، أَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " هُوَ رِزْقٌ أَخْرَجَهُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ ، فَهَلْ مِنْ لَحْمِهِ مَعَكُمْ شَيْءٌ تُطْعِمُونَا ؟ " فَأَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِ مِنْهُ ، فَأَكَلَهُ .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us on an expedition. He appointed Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as our leader. Our intention was to intercept a caravan of the Quraysh. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us a bag of dates as provisions for the journey. We did not get anything else besides that. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give us one date each to eat. (The narrator says) I asked, what did you do with it? He replied: We used to suck it just as a child sucks, and then we would drink water after that, and it would suffice us for the whole day. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We used to knock down leaves with our sticks, soak them in water, and then eat them. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We kept walking until a huge rock-like thing appeared before us on the seashore. When we approached it, it was an animal called "ambergris" (whale). Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is carrion. Then he said: No, we are the messengers of Allah’s Messenger, and we are in the path of Allah, and you are in a state of necessity, so eat it. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We stayed there for a month. We were three hundred men, until we became fat (by eating it). I remember about myself that we took out several containers of fat from its eyes, and we cut dried meat from it. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) took thirteen men from among us, and they sat in the socket of its eye. Then Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah took one of its ribs and set it upright, and made a man ride the tallest camel, and he passed under it. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Then we took its meat as provisions with us. When we reached Madinah and presented ourselves before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we mentioned this matter to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is the provision that Allah brought out for you. Do you have any of its meat left to feed us? We sent some of its meat to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he ate it.
