Table Manners – Warning against combining two bites in eating when food is scarce and needed
Hadith 5231
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ الْجُمَحِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ ، وَالْحَوْضِيُّ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، قَالَ : جَبَلَةُ بْنُ سُحَيْمٍ أَخْبَرَنِي ، قَالَ : كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَمُرُّ بِنَا ، فَيَقُولُ لا تُقَارِنُوا ، فَإِنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى عَنِ الْقِرَانِ ، إِلا أَنْ يَسْتَأْذِنَ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ " .
Jabalah bin Suhaim narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed by us and said: Do not eat (two dates) together, because the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating (two dates) together at once. However, if a person obtains permission from his brother (then the ruling is different).
Hadith 5232
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي مَعْشَرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَزَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ جَبَلَةَ بْنِ سُحَيْمٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ أَكَلَ مَعَ قَوْمٍ مِنْ تَمْرٍ ، فَلا يَقْرِنْ ، فَإِنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ ، فَإِنْ أَذِنُوا لَهُ ، فَلْيَفْعَلْ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever is eating dates with people should not eat two dates together; if he intends to do so, he should seek their permission. If they permit him, then he may do so."
