Table Manners – Report refuting the ignorant claim of some Sufis that eating at a table is not Sunnah
Hadith 5223
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : أَهْدَتْ أُمُّ حُفَيْدٍ خَالَتِي بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَمْنًا وَأَقِطًا وَأَضُبًّا ، " فَدَعَا بِهِنَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَكَلَ عَلَى مَائِدَتِهِ وَتَرَكَهُنَّ كَالْمُتَقَذِّرِ لَهُنَّ ، وَلَوْ كَانَ حَرَامًا مَا أُكِلَتْ عَلَى مَائِدَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَلا أُمِرَ بِأَكْلِهِنَّ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates: My maternal aunt, Sayyida Umm Hufaid bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her), presented clarified butter, cheese, and a monitor lizard to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When the Prophet (peace be upon him) had them brought, they were eaten on his dining mat, but the Prophet (peace be upon him), disliking it, did not eat it himself. If it had been forbidden, it would not have been eaten on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) dining mat, nor would he have ordered it to be eaten.
