Hadith 5145
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَهُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ : " أَنَّهُ كَانَ ابْنَ عَشَرِ سِنِينَ مَقْدِمَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ ، فَكُنَّ أُمَّهَاتِي يُحَرِّضْنَنِي عَلَى خِدْمَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : فَخَدَمْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَشْرًا حَيَاتَهُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ ، وَتُوُفِّيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا ابْنُ عِشْرِينَ سَنَةً ، قَالَ : وَكُنْتُ أَعْلَمَ النَّاسِ بِشَأْنِ الْحِجَابِ حِينَ أُنْزِلَ ، لَقَدْ كَانَ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ يَسْأَلُنِي عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : وَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَا أُنْزِلَ فِي مُبْتَنَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِزَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ ، أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِهَا عَرُوسًا ، فَدَعَا الْقَوْمَ ، فَأَصَابُوا مِنَ الطَّعَامِ ، وَخَرَجُوا ، وَبَقِيَ مِنْهُمْ رَهْطٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَطَالُوا الْمُكْثَ ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَخَرَجَ وَخَرَجْتُ مَعَهُ لِكَيْ يَخْرُجُوا ، فَمَشَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَشَيْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى جَاءَ عَتَبَةَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ ، ثُمَّ ظَنَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا ، فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَى زَيْنَبَ ، وَإِذَا هُمْ جُلُوسٌ لَمْ يَقُومُوا ، فَرَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى بَلَغَ عَتْبَةَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ ، فَظَنَّ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا ، فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ ، فَإِذَا هُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا ، فَضَرَبَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ سِتْرًا ، وَأُنْزِلَ الْحِجَابُ " .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) was ten years old at that time. My mother and my maternal aunts used to encourage me to serve the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). I served the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) for ten years, that is, during the period when he resided in Madinah Munawwarah. Then, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, I was twenty years old. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I have the most knowledge about the command of hijab and when it was revealed. People like Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) used to ask me about this matter. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) married Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), it was at that time that this was revealed. The morning after the marriage, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) invited people. Those people ate food and then left. Some of them remained seated with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). They sat for quite a while, then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and left, and I went along with him. The purpose was that those people would also get up and leave. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) kept walking, and I went with him. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the threshold of Sayyidah Aisha's (may Allah be pleased with her) room, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) thought that those people must have left. He returned, and I also returned with him. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the house of Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), those people were still sitting there. They had not gotten up and left, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) returned again, and I also returned with him. Then, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the door of Sayyidah Aisha's (may Allah be pleased with her) room, he thought that those people must have left. He returned, and I also returned, and those people had left. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had a curtain placed between those people and himself, and at that time the verse regarding the command of hijab was revealed.
