Report explicitly denying permissibility of favoritism in gifts among children
Hadith 5102
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ أَعْطَاهُ غُلامًا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا هَذَا الْغُلامُ ؟ " قَالَ : غُلامٌ أَعْطَانِيهِ أَبِي ، قَالَ : " فَكُلُّ إِخْوَتِكَ أَعْطَاهُ كَمَا أَعْطَاكَ ؟ " قَالَ : لا ، قَالَ : " فَارْدُدْهُ " ، وَقَالَ لأَبِيهِ : " لا تُشْهِدْنِي عَلَى جَوْرٍ " .
Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: His father gave him a slave as a gift. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired, “Whose slave is this?” He replied, “This is the slave whom my father has given to me.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Have he given all your brothers the same as he has given you?” Sayyiduna Nu’man (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, “No.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Then return it.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his father, “Do not make me a witness to an act of injustice.”
