Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever swears a false oath in order to suppress or obtain someone’s right, will meet Allah while Allah is angry with him. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ash’ath (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! This incident happened with me. There was a dispute between me and a Jew regarding a piece of land. He denied my ownership of the land, so I brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Do you have any witnesses? I replied: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Jew: Then you swear an oath. I said: O Messenger of Allah! If he swears an oath, he will take my land just like that! Upon this, Allah revealed this verse: «إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلا» [3-آل عمران: 77] “Indeed, those who exchange Allah’s covenant and their oaths for a small price…” (till the end of the Ayah)
