Chapter: Usury - Report refuting those who claim Nafi' did not hear this narration from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri
Hadith 5017
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ الْكَلاعِيُّ بِحِمْصٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا حَدَّثَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ نَافِعٌ : فَانْطَلَقَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ وَذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ وَأَنَا مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى دَخَلْنَا عَلَى أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ لأَبِي سَعِيدٍ : أَرَأَيْتَ حَدِيثًا حَدَّثَنِيهِ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ ، أَنَّكَ تُحَدِّثُهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَسَمِعْتَهُ ؟ قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ : وَمَا هُوَ ؟ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ : بَيْعُ الذَّهَبِ بِالذَّهَبِ ، وَالْوَرِقِ بِالْوَرِقِ ، فَأَشَارَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ بِأُصْبُعِهِ إِلَى عَيْنَيْهِ وَإِلَى أُذُنَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : بَصُرَ عَيْنِي ، وَسَمِعَ أُذُنِيَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " لا تَبِيعُوا الذَّهَبَ بِالذَّهَبِ إِلا مِثْلا بِمِثْلٍ ، وَلا تُشِفُّوا بَعْضَهَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ ، وَلا تَبِيعُوا الْوَرِقَ بِالْوَرِقِ إِلا مِثْلا بِمِثْلٍ ، وَلا تُشِفُّوا بَعْضَهَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ ، وَلا تَبِيعُوا مِنْهَا شَيْئًا غَائِبًا بِنَاجِزٍ " .
Nafi’ reports: A man informed Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) had narrated this hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Nafi’ reports: Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and that man set out, and I was with them. Until we reached Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said to Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): Are you aware of the hadith that this man has narrated to me? Did you narrate that report from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? Did you hear this from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) himself? Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What is that matter? So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: The narration regarding selling gold for gold and silver for silver. Then Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) pointed with his fingers towards his eyes and ears and stated: My eyes saw this and my ears heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when he said this: “Sell gold for gold only in equal amounts. Do not pay less on either side. And sell silver for silver only in equal amounts. Do not pay less on either side. And do not sell something absent for something present among them.”
