Chapter: Usury - Clarification that selling such items with a difference is usury
Hadith 5013
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَوْسِ بْنِ الْحَدَثَانِ ، أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّهُ الْتَمَسَ صَرْفًا بِمِئَةِ دِينَارٍ : قَالَ : فَدَعَانِي طَلْحَةُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، فَتَرَاوَضْنَا حَتَّى اصْطَرَفَ مِنِّي وَأَخَذَ الذَّهَبَ يُقَلِّبُهَا فِي يَدِهِ ، وَقَالَ : حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ خَازِنِي مِنَ الْغَابَةِ ، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ يَسْمَعُ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : وَاللَّهِ لا تُفَارِقُهُ حَتَّى تَأْخُذَ مِنْهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ عُمَرُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " الذَّهَبُ بِالْوَرِقِ رِبًا إِلا هَاءً وَهَاءً ، وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ رِبًا إِلا هَاءً وَهَاءً ، وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ رِبًا إِلا هَاءً وَهَاءً ، وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ رِبًا إِلا هَاءً وَهَاءً " .
Sayyiduna Malik bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He wanted to exchange one hundred dinars. He says: Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) called me, and we both agreed on the transaction. He completed the exchange with me and took the gold, turning it over in his hand. He said: My clerk comes from the forest (Ghābah), (then I will pay you). Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) heard this. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, you will not separate from him until you receive it from him. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) informed that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Exchanging gold for silver is usury except when it is hand to hand; exchanging wheat for wheat is usury except when it is hand to hand; exchanging dates for dates is usury except when it is hand to hand; exchanging barley for barley is usury except when it is hand to hand."
