Hadith 4891
Suwaid bin Ghaflah narrates: I set out with Zaid bin Suhan and Sulaiman bin Rabee’ah. On the way, I picked up a lost whip. Both of them said: Leave it. I said: By Allah, I will not leave it so that wild animals may eat it. I will benefit from it. I reached Madinah Munawwarah. I met Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: You did the right thing. I once found a pouch in which there were dinars. I took it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him about it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Announce it for one year. Then, when I found no one, I announced it for three years. Then I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Remember the string tied at the mouth of the pouch and the number of dinars in it. If someone comes and tells you about it, then hand it over to him. Otherwise, you may benefit from it.
