Hadith 4873
Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the month of Dhu al-Qa’dah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ‘Umrah, but the people of Makkah prevented him from entering Makkah. Until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made an agreement with them that he would stay in Makkah for three days. When they wrote the agreement, they wrote: “This is the agreement which Allah’s Messenger, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), is making.” The disbelievers said: “We do not accept this. If we knew that you (peace and blessings be upon him) are Allah’s Messenger, we would not prevent you from anything. Rather, you (peace and blessings be upon him) are Muhammad bin ‘Abdullah (write only this).” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I am Allah’s Messenger as well as Muhammad bin ‘Abdullah.” Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): “Erase the words ‘Messenger of Allah’.” He said: “I will never erase your (blessed) name.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the document—he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not know how to write properly. By his (peace and blessings be upon him) command, the words ‘Messenger of Allah’ were replaced with ‘Muhammad’, and it was written: “This is the agreement which Muhammad bin ‘Abdullah is making: that he will not enter Makkah with weapons, except that their swords will be in their sheaths, and they will not take with them from Makkah anyone who is their follower, nor will they prevent any of their companions who wishes to remain in Makkah.”

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah and the appointed period passed, people came to Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: “Tell your master to leave us, for the appointed time has ended.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to depart, when the daughter of Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) came calling after him (peace and blessings be upon him): “O uncle! O uncle!” Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) caught hold of the girl, took her by the hand, and said to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her): “Take care of your cousin.” Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) picked her up. There was a dispute regarding this girl between Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I have taken her.” Sayyiduna Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “She is my cousin, and her maternal aunt is my wife.” Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “She is my niece.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) decided in favor of her maternal aunt regarding the girl. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The maternal aunt is like the mother.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): “You are from me and I am from you.” He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with him): “You resemble me in appearance and character.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him): “You are our brother and our freed slave.”
