Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards Badr, and he encountered the enemy. Allah Almighty routed those people, so a group of Muslims went after them to fight, while another group stayed around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One group took charge of the army and the spoils. When Allah Almighty granted safety from the enemy and those who had gone after them returned, they said: “We deserve extra payment, because we went after the enemy, and because of us Allah Almighty drove them away and routed them.” Those who were guarding around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “By Allah! You are not more entitled to it than us; it will be given to us as well, because we were protecting the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that no enemy could harm him.” Those who were guarding the army and the spoils said: “By Allah! You are not more entitled to it than us; it will be given to us.” So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: “They ask you about the extra payment.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed the spoils among them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to give them gifts. When they set out from there, at first a quarter was given, and when they returned, they were given a third as extra payment. On the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held a hair from the side of a camel and said: “O people! Whatever Allah Almighty gives you as spoils, nothing of it is lawful for me (not even) as much as this hair, except for the khums (one-fifth), and even the khums will be returned to you. Therefore, pay even the needle and thread, and avoid betrayal, for it will be a disgrace for its doer on the Day of Resurrection. It is obligatory upon you to strive in the way of Allah, for it is one of the gates of Paradise, through which Allah Almighty removes distress and grief.” The narrator states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked extra payment and used to say: “Let the well-off among the believers give it to their poor.”
