Chapter on Setting Out and the Manner of Jihad – On God’s forgiveness of the sins of those who witnessed Badr with the Prophet.
Hadith 4797
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ مَوْهَبٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، أَنَّ حَاطِبَ بْنَ أَبِي بَلْتَعَةَ كَتَبَ إِلَى أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ يَذْكُرُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُرِيدُ غَزْوَهُمْ ، فَدَلَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ الَّتِي مَعَهَا الْكِتَابُ ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهَا ، فَأَخَذَ كِتَابَهَا مِنْ رَأْسِهَا ، فَقَالَ : يَا حَاطِبُ ، أَفَعَلْتَ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ إِنِّي لَمْ أَفْعَلْهُ غِشًّا لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَلا نِفَاقًا ، وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ سَيُظْهِرُ رَسُولَهُ وَيُتِمُّ أَمْرَهُ ، غَيْرَ أَنِّي كُنْتُ غَرِيبًا بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَيْهِمْ ، فَكَانَتْ أَهْلِي مَعَهُمْ ، فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَتَّخِذَهَا عِنْدَهُمْ يَدًا ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : أَلا أَضْرِبُ رَأْسَ هَذَا ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَتَقْتُلُ رَجُلا مِنْ أَهْلِ بَدْرٍ ، وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ اطَّلَعَ عَلَى أَهْلِ بَدْرٍ ، فَقَالَ : اعْمَلُوا مَا شِئْتُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Hatib bin Abi Balta’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to the people of Makkah in which he mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to fight against them. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed about the woman who had that letter with her. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) sent (Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him) to that woman, and he obtained the letter from her hair. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: O Hatib, did you do this? He replied: Yes, but I did not do it to deceive the Messenger of Allah, nor out of hypocrisy. I knew that Allah would make this matter known to His Messenger and would fulfill His command, but I am a stranger among those people. My family was among them, so I wanted to do them a favor. Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Should I not strike off his head? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you want to kill a man who participated in Badr? You do not know, perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do whatever you wish.
