Chapter on Setting Out and the Manner of Jihad – On God’s giving the Companions at Badr the choice between ransom and killing.
Hadith 4795
أَخْبَرَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ أَرَّكِينَ الْحَافِظُ بِدِمَشْقَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا رِزْقُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ ، أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ هَبَطَ عَلَيْهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ : " خَيِّرْهُمْ ، يَعْنِي أَصْحَابَهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فِي الأُسَارَى إِنْ شَاءُوا الْقَتْلَ ، وَإِنْ شَاءُوا الْفِدَاءَ ، عَلَى أَنْ يُقْتَلَ الْعَامَ الْمُقْبِلَ مِنْهُمْ عِدَّتُهُمْ " ، قَالُوا : الْفِدَاءُ ، وَيُقْتَلُ مِنَّا عِدَّتُهُمْ .
Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said to him: Give them the choice, that is, give your companions the choice regarding the prisoners. If they wish, they may kill them, and if they wish, they may take ransom. On the condition that next year, the same number of them will be killed. Those people said: We will take ransom, so then the same number of us were killed.
