Chapter on Setting Out and the Manner of Jihad – Clarifying that the prohibition of killing enemy women and children applies to deliberate killing, not surprise attacks.
Hadith 4786
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي الصَّعْبُ بْنُ جَثَّامَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، سُئِلَ عَنِ الذَّرَارِيِّ مِنْ دُورِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ يُبَيَّتُونَ وَفِيهِمُ النِّسَاءُ وَالصِّبْيَانُ ، فَقَالَ : " هُمْ مِنْهُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates: Sayyiduna Sa'b bin Jaththamah (may Allah be pleased with him) related this hadith to me: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about the children and women residing in the settlements of the polytheists, who are attacked at night. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: They are part of them.
