Iyad Ash'ari narrates: I participated in the Battle of Yarmouk. There were five commanders in it: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Yazid bin Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Shurahbil bin Hasnah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Iyad (may Allah be pleased with him). This is not the same Iyad who is narrating this narration. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the battle begins, Abu Ubaidah will be your commander. The narrator states: We wrote a letter to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that death has surrounded us, we sought his help, so he wrote us a reply that your letter has reached me, in which you have asked for help. I guide you to that which is more beneficial for help, which is more protective for the army, that is Allah Himself. Seek help from Him, because Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was helped, and he was helped with fewer numbers than you. When my letter reaches you, fight along with them and do not write to me again. The narrator states: We fought the disbelievers and we made them retreat. For four farsakh we kept killing them, and we obtained a lot of wealth. They consulted among themselves, so Sayyiduna Iyad (may Allah be pleased with him) advised that there should be ten on behalf of every man. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Who will help me? A young man said: I will, if you do not get angry. The narrator states: So he went ahead of them, so I saw the shoulders of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) moving as he was behind him on an Arabian horse.
