Chapter on Setting Out and the Manner of Jihad – On the recommendation for a person to show off his horse between the ranks, as God loves this.
Hadith 4762
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا الأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَتِيكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " مِنَ الْغَيْرَةِ مَا يُبْغِضُ اللَّهُ ، وَمِنْهَا مَا يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ ، وَمِنَ الْخُيَلاءِ مَا يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ ، وَمِنْهَا مَا يُبْغِضُ اللَّهُ ، فَالْغَيْرَةُ الَّتِي يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ الْغَيْرَةُ فِي الدِّينِ ، وَالْغَيْرَةُ الَّتِي يُبْغِضُ اللَّهُ الْغَيْرَةُ فِي غَيْرِ دِينِهِ ، وَالْخُيَلاءُ الَّذِي يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ اخْتِيَالُ الرَّجُلِ بِنَفْسِهِ عِنْدَ الْقِتَالِ وَعِنْدَ الصَّدَقَةِ ، وَالاخْتِيَالُ الَّذِي يُبْغِضُ اللَّهُ الاخْتِيَالُ فِي الْبَاطِلِ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Atik رضي الله عنه narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: There is a type of anger which Allah Almighty dislikes, and there is a type of anger which Allah Almighty likes. There is a type of pride whose expression Allah Almighty likes, and there is a type which Allah Almighty dislikes. The anger which Allah Almighty likes is anger in religious matters. The anger which Allah Almighty dislikes is anger in matters other than religion. And the pride which Allah Almighty likes is this: a person shows pride at the time of battle and shows pride when giving charity. And the pride which Allah Almighty dislikes is pride regarding falsehood.
