Chapter on Setting Out and the Manner of Jihad – On the permissibility for the fighters to attack the polytheists at night to catch them off guard.
Hadith 4744
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي إِيَاسُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : " غَزَوْتُ مَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حِينَ بَعَثَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْنَا ، فَبَيَّتْنَا أُنَاسًا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَقَتَلْنَاهُمْ ، وَكَانَ شِعَارُنَا أَمِتْ ، أَمِتْ " ، قَالَ : فَقَتَلْتُ بِيَدِي سَبْعَةَ أَهْلِ أَبْيَاتٍ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ .
Iyas bin Salamah bin Akwa’ narrates from his father: I participated in that battle along with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) as our leader and sent him with us. We attacked some polytheists at night and killed them. At that time, our slogan (or identifying cry) was: “Kill! Kill!” The narrator states: That night, I killed members of the households of the polytheists with my own hands.
