Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Badr, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) consulted the people. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for more opinions, then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for more opinions. Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You wish to know our opinion. If you command us to jump into the sea, we will jump into the sea, and if you command us to march fighting them until we reach Bark al-Ghamad, we will do that as well. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed his companions and set out towards Badr. Some people from the Quraysh had already arrived there, among whom was a black slave of Banu Hajjaj. The companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) captured him and began to ask him: Where is Abu Sufyan? Where did you leave him? He kept saying: By Allah, I have no knowledge about Abu Sufyan. These are the people of Quraysh. There is Abu Jahl bin Hisham, Utbah bin Rabi’ah, Shaybah bin Rabi’ah, and Umayyah bin Khalaf. When he would say this in front of them, they would beat him, so he would say: Leave me, leave me, I will tell you. When they would leave him, he would again say: By Allah, I have no knowledge about Abu Sufyan. These are the Quraysh coming, among whom is Abu Jahl, Utbah, Shaybah—these two are sons of Rabi’ah—and Umayyah bin Khalaf. These people are coming. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing prayer at that time. When he finished the prayer, he said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul, when he tells you the truth, you start beating him, and when he lies, you leave him. These are the Quraysh who have come to save Abu Sufyan. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to the ground with his blessed hand and said: Tomorrow, so-and-so will be dead here. Tomorrow, so-and-so will be dead here. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: By Him in Whose hand is my soul, none of them was away from that specific spot.
