Hadith 4716
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade traveling towards the enemy’s land carrying the Qur’an, out of fear that the enemy might harm it. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The wording of this narration, “out of fear that the enemy might get hold of it,” is a clear statement that when the enemy is weak, their numbers are few, the Muslims are strong, and their numbers are greater, and then a Muslim travels carrying the Qur’an and it remains safe among the army in such a way that the Qur’an cannot fall into the enemy’s hands, then in this case it is permissible for that person to do so. However, if the situation is not as we have mentioned, then it is not permissible for a person to travel towards the land of war carrying the Qur’an.
