Chapter on Archery – On the command to practice archery and its teaching, as it is from the tradition of Ishmael, peace be upon him.
Hadith 4693
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى الْقَطَّانِ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ ، قَالَ : خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى قَوْمٍ مِنْ أَسْلَمَ يَتَنَاضَلُونَ بِالسُّوقِ ، فَقَالَ : " ارْمُوا بَنِي إِِسْمَاعِيلَ ، فَإِِنَّ أَبَاكُمْ كَانَ رَامِيًا . وَأَنَا مَعَ بَنِي فُلانٍ " لأَحَدِ الْفَرِقَيْنِ ، فَأَمْسَكُوا أَيْدِيَهُمْ ، فَقَالَ : " مَا لَكُمُ ارْمُوا " . قَالُوا : كَيْفَ نَرْمِي وَأَنْتَ مَعَ بَنِي فُلانٍ ؟ قَالَ : " ارْمُوا وَأَنَا مَعَكُمْ كُلُّكُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to some people from the tribe of Aslam who were practicing archery in the market. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O children of Isma’il, shoot arrows, for your forefather was an archer. And I am with Banu so-and-so. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this about one of the two groups, they stopped shooting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What happened? Shoot arrows. The people said: How can we shoot when you are with Banu so-and-so? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shoot arrows, for I am with all of you.
