Chapter on Horses - On what prayers are said for horses in Allah's cause
Hadith 4681
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : غَزَوْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَزْوَةَ تَبُوكَ ، فَجَهَدَ الظَّهْرُ جَهْدًا شَدِيدًا " فَشَكَوْا إِِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا بِظَهْرِهِمْ مِنَ الْجَهْدِ ، فَتَحَيَّنَ بِهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَضِيقًا سَارَ النَّاسُ فِيهِ ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : " مُرُّوا بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ، فَجَعَلَ يَنْفُخُ بِظَهْرِهِمْ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : اللَّهُمَّ احْمِلْ عَلَيْهَا فِي سَبِيلِكِ ، فَإِِنَّكَ تَحْمِلُ عَلَى الْقَوِيِّ وَالضَّعِيفِ وَالرَّطْبِ وَالْيَابِسِ فِي الْبِرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ " . قَالَ فَضَالَةُ : فَلَمَّا بَلَغَنَا الْمَدِينَةَ ، جَعَلَتْ تُنَازِعُنَا أَزِمَّتُهَا ، فَقُلْتُ : هَذِهِ دَعْوَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْقَوِيِّ وَالضَّعِيفِ ، فَمَا بَالُ الرَّطْبِ وَالْيَابِسِ ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا الشَّامَ غَزَوْنَا غَزْوَةَ قُبْرُسَ ، وَرَأَيْتُ السُّفُنَ وَمَا تَدْخُلُ ، عَرَفْتُ دَعْوَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Sayyiduna Fadala bin Ubaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He participated in the Battle of Tabuk with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the mounts became extremely weak. The people complained to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that their mounts had become weak, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ordered them to pass through a narrow path. The people passed through there, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was saying: "Pass through taking the name of Allah." He would blow on their mounts and say: "O Allah! Make riding on this easy in Your path, for You alone provide mounts for the strong and the weak, and on the dry and the wet, You provide mounts on land and sea." Sayyiduna Fadala (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When we reached Madinah, it became difficult for us to control those mounts (i.e., they were moving swiftly). So I thought that this is the result of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) supplication regarding the strong and the weak, but what could be the case regarding the dry and the wet? Then, when we went to Syria and participated in the Battle of Cyprus and I saw large (warships), I realized that this too was the result of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) supplication.
