Chapter on Horses - On clarifying that spending on horses kept for Allah's cause is like charity
Hadith 4675
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي السَّرِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، وَأَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَثَلُ الْمُنْفِقِ عَلَى الْخَيْلِ كَالْمُتَكَفِّفِ بِالصَّدَقَةِ " . فَقُلْنَا لِمَعْمَرٍ : مَا الْمُتَكَفِّفُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ ؟ قَالَ : الَّذِي يُعْطَى بِكَفَّيْهِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of the one who spends on a horse is like that of a person who holds something in his hand to give in charity." The narrator says: We asked Mu'ammar: What is meant by holding charity in the hand? He replied: It means that he gives charity with his hand.
