Chapter on the Virtue of Martyrdom - On clarifying that prophets only surpass martyrs by the rank of prophethood
Hadith 4663
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَبَّانُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، أَنَّ أَبَا الْمُثَنَّى الْمُلَيْكِيَّ حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُتْبَةَ بْنَ عَبْدِ السُّلَمِيِّ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " الْقَتْلَى ثَلاثَةٌ : رَجُلٌ مُؤْمِنٌ جَاهَدَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، حَتَّى إِِذَا لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ قَاتَلَهُمْ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ ، فَذَلِكَ الشَّهِيدُ الْمُمْتَحَنُ ، فِي خَيْمَةِ اللَّهِ ، تَحْتَ عَرْشِهِ ، وَلا يَفْضُلُهُ النَّبِيُّونَ إِِلا بِفَضْلِ دَرَجَةِ النُّبُوَّةِ ، وَرَجُلٌ مُؤْمِنٌ قَرَفَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ وَالْخَطَايَا ، جَاهَدَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، حَتَّى إِِذَا لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ قَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ ، فَتِلْكَ مَصْمَصَةٌ مَحَتْ ذُنُوبَهُ وَخَطَايَاهُ ، إِِنَّ السَّيْفَ مَحَّاءٌ لِلْخَطَايَا ، وَأُدْخِلَ مِنْ أَيِّ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ شَاءَ ، فَإِِنَّ لَهَا ثَمَانِيَةَ أَبْوَابٍ ، وَلِجَهَنَّمَ سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَابٍ ، وَبَعْضُهَا أَفْضَلُ مِنْ بَعْضٍ ، وَرَجُلٌ مُنَافِقٌ جَاهَدَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، حَتَّى إِِذَا لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ قَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ ، فَذَلِكَ فِي النَّارِ ، إِِنَّ السَّيْفَ لا يَمْحُو النِّفَاقَ " .
Sayyiduna Utbah bin Abdus Salami, who is a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), narrates: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There are three types of people who are killed. One is the person who is a believer, who participates in jihad in the way of Allah with his life and wealth, until when he faces the enemy, he fights and is martyred. He is the martyr who was put to trial; he will be under the Throne of Allah in a tent made by Allah, and only the rank of prophethood will be superior to him for the Prophets. The second is the person who is involved in sins and mistakes; he participates in jihad with his life and wealth, until when he faces the enemy, he fights and is martyred. This is the thing that wipes out his sins and mistakes; indeed, the sword wipes out sins. Such a person will enter Paradise through whichever of its eight doors he wishes. Paradise has eight doors, Hell has seven doors, and some of them are superior to others. And the third is the person who is a hypocrite, who participates in jihad with his life and wealth, until when he faces the enemy, he fights and is killed. This person will go to Hell, because the sword cannot wipe out hypocrisy.
