Chapter on the Virtue of Spending in Allah's Cause - On the report that Allah may multiply the reward for spending in His cause beyond the mentioned number
Hadith 4648
أَخْبَرَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ أَرَّكِينَ الْفَرْغَانِيُّ أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ بِدِمَشْقَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُمَرَ الدُّورِيُّ حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ الْمُقْرِئُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِِسْمَاعِيلَ الْمُؤَدِّبُ ، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ : مَثَلُ الَّذِينَ يُنْفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنْبَتَتْ سَبْعَ سَنَابِلَ فِي كُلِّ سُنْبُلَةٍ مِائَةُ حَبَّةٍ وَاللَّهُ يُضَاعِفُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَاللَّهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ سورة البقرة آية 261 ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " رَبِّ زِدْ أُمَّتِي " ، فَنَزَلَتْ : مَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً سورة البقرة آية 245 ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " رَبِّ زِدْ أُمَّتِي " ، فَنَزَلَتْ : إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ سورة الزمر آية 10 " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When this verse was revealed: "The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a grain of corn that grows seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies for whom He wills, and Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing." the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made this supplication: O my Lord! Grant my Ummah more. So Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: "Who is it that will lend to Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over." The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) supplicated: O my Lord! Grant my Ummah more. Then this verse was revealed: "Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account."
