Chapter on the Virtue of Jihad - On clarifying that one who seeks worldly gain in fighting gets only that, not the reward of the Hereafter
Hadith 4638
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ جَبَلَةَ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ غَزَا وَلا يَنْوِي فِي غَزَاتِهِ إِِلا عِقَالا ، فَلَهُ مَا نَوَى " . قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : هَذَا يَحْيَى بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ابْنُ أَخِي عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ .
Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever participates in battle, and while participating in battle, his intention is only to obtain a rope, then he will get only that which he intended." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The narrator of this narration, Yahya bin Waleed bin Samit, is the nephew of Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him).
