Chapter on the Virtue of Jihad - On deeds ceasing at death except for the one who stands guard, whose reward continues and is safe from grave punishment
Hadith 4624
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَبَّانُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو هَانِئٍ الْخَوْلانِيُّ ، أَنَّ عَمْرَوَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ الْجَنْبِيَّ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ فَضَالَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " كُلُّ مَيِّتٍ يُخْتَمُ عَلَى عَمَلِهِ ، إِِلا الَّذِي مَاتَ مُرَابِطًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، فَإِِنَّهُ يَنْمُو لَهُ عَمَلُهُ إِِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ، وَيَأْمَنُ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ " . قَالَ : قَالَ : وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " الْمُجَاهِدُ مَنْ جَاهَدَ نَفْسَهُ لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " .
Sayyiduna Fadala bin Ubaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "The deeds of every deceased person are sealed except for the one who dies while guarding in the way of Allah; the deeds of that person continue to increase until the Day of Resurrection, and that person is safe from the trial of the grave." He states: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying this: "The true Mujahid is the one who strives with his life for the pleasure of Allah Almighty."
