Chapter on the Virtue of Jihad - On Allah granting the one who stands guard for a day or night in His cause more than a month of fasting and prayer
Hadith 4623
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ مَوْهَبٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مُوسَى ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ ، عَنْ شُرَحْبِيلَ بْنِ السِّمْطِ ، أَنَّهُ مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ سَلْمَانُ وَهُوَ مُرَابِطٌ ، فَقَالَ : مَا تَصْنَعُ هَا هُنَا يَا شُرَحْبِيلُ ؟ فَقَالَ شُرَحْبِيلُ : أُرَابِطُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ . قَالَ سَلْمَانُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " رِبَاطُ يَوْمٍ أَوْ لَيْلَةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ صِيَامِ شَهْرٍ وَقِيَامِهِ " .
Shurahbil bin Simt narrates: Once, Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by him while he was standing guard. Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Shurahbil, what are you doing here?" Shurahbil replied: "I am standing guard." Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'One day (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words) or one night of standing guard is better than fasting for a month and performing voluntary prayers.'"
