Sharhabeel bin Simt narrates: We said to Sayyiduna Ka’b bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him): O Sayyiduna Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him), narrate to us a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and be cautious. So he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Whoever shoots an arrow at the enemy, Allah raises his rank because of it.” Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Naham (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! What is meant by rank? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: It is not like the threshold of your mother’s house, rather, between two ranks is a distance of one hundred years’ journey. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) When the people said to Sayyiduna Ka’b bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that you narrate to us a hadith and be cautious, by this statement they meant that you should be careful not to make a mistake and not to narrate more or less words. They did not mean that you should be cautious of lying, because all the Companions are just (‘adil)—may Allah have mercy on them and grant us their company (in the Hereafter) as well.
