Abu Musabbih narrates: We were traveling in the land of Rome with a group whose supervisor was Malik bin Abdullah Khath’ami. Malik passed by Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was walking on foot, leading his mule. Malik said to him: O Abu Abdullah, mount (your ride), Allah Almighty has granted you a mount. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: I have kept my mount ready, I am not in need of people. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Whoever’s two feet become dusty in the way of Allah (while going for jihad), Allah makes the Hellfire forbidden for that person.” (The narrator says) Malik liked this statement very much. Malik moved ahead and went so far that his voice could still reach Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). When he reached there, he called out loudly: O Abu Abdullah! Mount (your ride), Allah Almighty has granted you a mount. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) realized why he had said this in a loud voice. He said: I have kept my mount in good condition, I do not need my people (I am walking on foot for this reason) because I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Whoever’s two feet become dusty in the way of Allah (while going for jihad), Allah makes the Hellfire forbidden for that person.” So all the people dismounted from their rides. The narrator says: We have never seen more people walking on foot than on that day. Maqri is a village near Damascus and Mahri is a quarter in Fustat. This was stated by the Sheikh.
