Chapter on the Virtue of Jihad - On clarifying that jihad in Islam erases past sins
Hadith 4601
أَخْبَرَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الْعِجْلِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ ، قَالَ : أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلٌ مُقَنَّعٌ فِي الْحَدِيدِ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أُقَاتِلُ أَوْ أُسْلِمُ ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَسْلِمْ ، ثُمَّ قَاتِلْ " . فأسْلَمَ ثُمَّ قَاتِلْ ، فَقُتِلَ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَذَا عَمِلَ قَلِيلا وَأُجِرَ كَثِيرًا " .
Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who was wearing iron armor. He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Should I participate in the battle, or should I accept Islam? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You should accept Islam, then participate in the battle. The man accepted Islam, then participated in the battle and was martyred. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: He did little deeds, but he will receive a great reward.
