Chapter on the Virtue of Jihad - On describing the fighter who is better than the devoted worshipper
Hadith 4600
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ بَعْجَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْجُهَنِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ يَكُونُ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ فِيهِ مَنْزِلَةً رَجُلٌ آخِذٌ بِعِنَانِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، كُلَّمَا سَمِعَ بِهَيْعَةٍ اسْتَوَى عَلَى مَتْنِهِ ، ثُمَّ طَلَبَ الْمَوْتَ مَظَانَّهُ ، وَرَجُلٌ فِي شِعْبٍ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشِّعَابِ يُقِيمُ الصَّلاةَ ، وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ ، وَيَدَعُ النَّاسَ إِِلا مِنْ خَيْرِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A time will come upon the people when the best person among them in terms of status and rank will be the one who, holding the reins of his horse, sets out in the path of Allah for jihad. Whenever he hears the call to battle, he will mount his horse and seek death (martyrdom), or the person who resides in a mountain pass, establishes prayer, pays zakat, and deals with people only with goodness."
