Chapter on the Virtue of Jihad - On clarifying that jihad in Allah's cause is better than isolation for worship
Hadith 4599
أَخْبَرَنَا حَامِدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ شُعَيْبِ الْبَلْخِيُّ بِبَغْدَادَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ أَبِي مُزَاحِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمْزَةَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيُّ النَّاسِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ : " رَجُلٌ جَاهَدَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِمَالِهِ وَنَفْسِهِ ، ثُمَّ مُؤْمِنٌ فِي شِعْبٍ مِنَ الشِّعَابِ يَعْبُدُ اللَّهَ ، وَيَدَعُ النَّاسَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Which person has the most virtue? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The person who strives in the way of Allah with his wealth and life, then the believer who lives in a mountain pass worshipping Allah and keeps people safe from his harm.
