Chapter on Obedience to Leaders - On fulfilling one's obligations even under unjust rulers
Hadith 4587
أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِصَامِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِِنَّهَا سَتَكُونُ أَثَرَةٌ وَأُمُورٌ تُنْكِرُونَهَا " . قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا ؟ قَالَ : " تُؤَدُّونَ الْحَقَّ الَّذِي عَلَيْكُمْ ، وَتَسْأَلُونَ الَّذِي لَكُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will be preferential treatment (shown to others over you) and things will appear which you will dislike." The people asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What do you command us to do in such a situation?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fulfill the obligation that is upon you, and ask Allah for your rights."
