Chapter on Allegiance to Leaders and What Is Recommended for Them - On the recommendation for the leader to take allegiance from women if he wishes
Hadith 4553
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ أُمَيْمَةَ بِنْتِ رُقَيْقَةَ ، أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ : " أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نِسْوَةٍ يُبَايِعْنَهُ ، فَقُلْنَ : نُبَايِعُكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَلَى أَنْ لا نُشْرِكَ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا ، وَلا نَسْرِقَ ، وَلا نَزْنِيَ ، وَلا نَقْتُلَ أَوْلادَنَا ، وَلا نَأْتِيَ بِبُهْتَانٍ نَفْتَرِيهِ بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا وَأَرْجُلِنَا ، وَلا نَعْصِيَكَ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُنَّ وَأَطَقْتُنَّ " . قَالَتْ : فَقُلْتُ : اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَرْحَمُ بِنَا مِنْ أَنْفُسِنَا ، هَلُمَّ نُبَايِعُكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِِنِّي لا أُصَافِحُ النِّسَاءَ ، إِِنَّمَا قَوْلِي لِمِائَةِ امْرَأَةٍ كَقَوْلِي لامْرَأَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ ، أَوْ مِثْلَ قَوْلِي لامْرَأَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ " .
Sayyidah Umaymah bint Ruqayqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I, along with some women, presented myself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) who were to pledge allegiance on the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace be upon him). These women said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! We pledge allegiance to you on your blessed hand that we will not associate anyone with Allah, we will not steal, we will not commit adultery, we will not kill our children, we will not fabricate and falsely accuse anyone, and we will not disobey you in any good work. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Do (act upon) this according to your ability and strength. That woman narrates: I said: Allah and His Messenger are more merciful to us than our own selves, O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Please extend your hand so that we may pledge allegiance to you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I do not shake hands with women. I speak to one woman in the same way as I speak to a hundred women (the narrator is unsure about one word here).
