Chapter on Allegiance to Leaders and What Is Recommended for Them - On clarifying that sincere advice is part of the allegiance, along with obedience
Hadith 4546
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ ، عَنْ جَرِيرٍ ، قَالَ : " بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى السَّمْعِ ، وَالطَّاعَةِ ، وَالنُّصْحِ لِكُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ " . فَكَانَ إِِذَا اشْتَرَى شَيْئًا أَوْ بَاعَهُ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ : اعْلَمْ أَنَّ مَا أَخَذْنَا مِنْكَ أَحَبُّ إِِلَيْنَا مِمَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَهُ فَاخْتَرْ .
Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I pledged allegiance to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on his blessed hand for obedience and submission, and for wishing well for every Muslim. (The narrator says) It was his (i.e., the Noble Prophet’s or perhaps Sayyiduna Jarir’s) practice that when he would buy or sell something, the other party would say: Know this, that what we have obtained from you is dearer to us than what we have given you, so now you have the choice (i.e., you may complete the transaction).
