Chapter on Caliphate and Leadership - On the recommendation for the leader to overlook the slips of dignified people
Hadith 4536
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الذُّهْلِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، قَالَ : " أَصَبْتُ شَارِفًا فِي مَغْنَمِ بَدْرٍ ، وَأَعْطَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَارِفًا ، فَأَنَخْتُهُمَا عَلَى بَابِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَحْمِلَ عَلَيْهِمَا إِِذْخِرًا أَبِيعَهُ أَسْتَعِينُ بِهِ عَلَى وَلِيمَةِ فَاطِمَةَ ، وَمَعِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي قَيْنُقَاعَ ، وَحَمْزَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فِي الْبَيْتِ ، وَمَعَهُ قَيْنَةٌ تُغَنِّيهِ ، فَقَالَتْ : أَلا يَا حَمْزُ لِلشُّرُفِ النِّوَاءِ فَثَارَ إِِلَيْهِمَا بِالسَّيْفِ ، فَجَبَّ أَسْنِمَتَهُمَا ، وَبَقَرَ خَوَاصِرَهُمَا ، وَأَخَذَ مِنْ أَكْبَادِهِمَا ، فَقُلْتُ : السِّنَامُ ، فَقَالَ : ذَهَبَ بِهِ كُلِّهِ ، قَالَ : فَنَظَرْتُ إِِلَى مَنْظَرٍ أَفْظَعَنِي ، فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعَهُ زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ ، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ ، فَخَرَجَ وَمَعَهُ زَيْدُ ، فَمَشَيْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى قَامَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ، أَوْ قَالَ : عَلَى رَأْسِ حَمْزَةَ فَتَغَيَّظَ عَلَيْهِ ، قَالَ : فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ، وَقَالَ : أَلَسْتُمْ عَبِيدَ آبَائِي ؟ قَالَ : فَرَجَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُقَهْقِرُ " .
Imam Zain al-Abidin (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Imam Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him) the following statement of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): In the spoils of the Battle of Badr, I received a she-camel. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also granted me another she-camel. I tied both of these she-camels near the door of an Ansari. I intended to load both of these she-camels with (a type of grass called) idhkhir, then sell it and prepare for the wedding feast (walima) for my marriage with Fatimah through its proceeds. There was also a man from Banu Qaynuqa with me. Sayyiduna Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was present in that house, and there was a slave girl singing. She was singing: "O Hamza! Attack the excellent camels." So Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) attacked both of them with a sword, cut off their humps, sliced their sides, and took out their livers. (The narrator states) I asked: What happened to the humps? He replied: They were all finished. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) states: When I saw all this, I was greatly distressed. I went to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Zaid bin Haritha (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with him. I mentioned this matter before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from there, and Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with him. I too walked along with them. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood by the head of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) (the narrator is unsure about a word here). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed his displeasure at him, so Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his head and said: "Are you all not the slaves of my forefathers?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) states: So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back and left.
