Abdul Muttalib bin Rabee’ah narrates: Sayyiduna Rabee’ah bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered together and said: By Allah! If we send these two boys (to the service of the Prophet ﷺ, it would be appropriate). The narrator says: They sent me and Sayyiduna Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) to the Prophet ﷺ so that the Prophet ﷺ would appoint both of them as supervisors for the collection of zakat, and that they would also receive the salary that is given to people, and that the benefit which people receive would also be given to them. The narrator says: Both of these gentlemen were still sitting there when, in the meantime, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived. He asked: What do you both want? Both of them informed him of their intention, so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not do this! By Allah, the Prophet ﷺ will not do this. They asked: Why are you saying this? Are you saying this out of jealousy towards us? You have had the companionship of the Prophet ﷺ, you are the son-in-law of the Prophet ﷺ, but we have never been jealous of you. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am Abu al-Hasan. You send both of them. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) lay down. When the Prophet ﷺ had performed the Zuhr prayer, we came and stood by the blessed chamber of the Prophet ﷺ before he arrived. When the Prophet ﷺ passed by us, he took hold of our ears and said: State what is on your minds. Then the Prophet ﷺ went inside the house. We also entered with him. That day, the Prophet ﷺ was staying at the house of Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her). The narrator states: Both of us spoke to the Prophet ﷺ about this matter. We said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we have come to you so that you may appoint us as supervisors for the collection of zakat, and that we may also receive the benefit that people receive (i.e., that we may also receive a salary). We will also pay you what people pay. The narrator says: The Prophet ﷺ remained silent. The Prophet ﷺ raised his blessed head and looked towards the roof of the house, until we wished that we had not spoken to him about this matter. The narrator states: From behind the curtain, Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) gestured to us not to speak to the Prophet ﷺ. Then the Prophet ﷺ turned towards us and said: Beware! Zakat is not appropriate for Muhammad and the family of Muhammad. This is the wealth of the people. Bring Muhammad bin Jaza’ to me; he was the supervisor of the ‘ashr (tithe) collection. And bring Abu Sufyan bin Harith to me. The narrator says: Both of those gentlemen came, so the Prophet ﷺ said to Sayyiduna Mahmiya (may Allah be pleased with him): Marry this boy to your daughter. The Prophet ﷺ said this regarding Sayyiduna Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him), so he married him to her. The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Sufyan bin Harith: Marry this boy to your daughter. The narrator says: So he married me to her. Then the Prophet ﷺ said to Sayyiduna Mahmiya (may Allah be pleased with him): Pay the dowry for both of them from the khums.
