Chapter on Caliphate and Leadership – Report on the obligation to avoid seeking leadership due to lack of support
Hadith 4479
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَوْنٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ السَّعْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ زَاذَانَ ، وَيُونُسُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، جَمِيعًا وَحُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ الْقُرَشِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ " لا تَسْأَلِ الإِِمَارَةَ ، فَإِِنَّكَ إِِنْ أُوتِيتَهَا عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ وُكِلْتَ إِِلَيْهَا ، وَإِِنْ أُوتِيتَهَا عَنْ غَيْرِ مَسْأَلَةٍ أُعِنْتَ عَلَيْهَا ، وَإِِذَا آلَيْتَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ وَرَأَيْتَ غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا ، فَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abdur Rahman! Do not seek a position of authority, for if it is given to you as a result of your asking, you will be left to it (on your own); but if it is given to you without your asking, you will be helped in it. And when you take an oath and then see that something else is better than it, then do what is better and offer expiation for your oath."
