Hadith 4478
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْقَطَّانُ بِالرَّقَّةِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مُوسَى الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّهُ قِيلَ لَهُ : أَلا تَسْتَخْلِفُ ؟ فَقَالَ : " إِِنْ أَتْرُكْ ، فَقَدْ تَرَكَ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي : رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَإِِنْ أَسْتَخْلِفْ ، فَقَدِ اسْتَخْلَفَ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي : أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، فَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ، وَقَالَ : إِِنِّي وَدِدْتُ أَنْ أَتَخَلَّصَ مِنْهَا لا عَلَيَّ وَلا لِي " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: It was submitted to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), "Why do you not appoint a successor for yourself?" He replied: "If I leave this matter, then that personality also left it who was better than me, and that was the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And if I appoint a successor, then that personality appointed a successor who was better than me, and that was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then he praised Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "My wish is that I get rid of this matter in such a way that there is nothing due upon me and nothing in my favor."
